Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned diver, this course equips you with essential knowledge that enhances your safety and enjoyment while diving.
The Science of Diving class is designed to provide divers with a comprehensive understanding of the physics and physiology of diving. It delves into the scientific concepts that affect divers, including pressure, buoyancy, gas laws, and the human body’s response to underwater environments. The course is structured to blend theoretical knowledge with practical applications, giving you a richer perspective on your diving experiences.
The SSI Science of Diving class is ideal for divers of all levels who want to deepen their understanding of the science behind their passion. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve logged hundreds of dives, this course provides valuable insights that enhance every dive you take.
This class is required training for most SSI Dive Professional programs, as well as some Extended Range programs. You will earn the SSI Science of Diving Specialty certification after completing this program.
Course content includes in-depth training in:
- Physics: Discover how pressure changes with depth and how that affects your buoyancy and gas absorption. Learn about Archimedes’ principle and how it relates to your diving gear and safety.
- Physiology: Dive deep into how the human body reacts to underwater conditions. Understand the effects of pressure on the body, the function of the lungs, and how to manage exposure to both air and water.
- Decompression Theory: Gain insight into the principles of gas laws and how they apply to diving. Learn about the importance of proper ascent rates, safety stops, and understanding decompression sickness.
- Diving Equipment: Familiarize yourself with the technology behind diving gear and how it operates under pressure. Understand the importance of maintaining and properly using your equipment to ensure safe diving practices.
- Aquatic Environment: Learn about the underwater ecosystems that divers interact with and the importance of conservation. Gain awareness of how diving practices can affect marine environments.
