The SSI Classified Dive Buddy program provides students with the training necessary to be a certified buddy to a Classified Diver. A Classified Diver is one with tailored support, modifications, or equipment designed to accommodate physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities. These adaptations enable individuals with diverse abilities to enjoy the experience of scuba diving safely and confidently, promoting inclusivity and accessibility in the sport. An SSI Classified Diver has been certified with the adaptive training necessary to dive with one or more Classified Dive Buddies, and/or a Classified Dive Professional depending on their abilities.
This course trains you to become a Classified (Adaptive) Dive Buddy; one who is a trained and experienced diver who supports and assists divers with disabilities or special needs. Their role is to ensure safety, provide appropriate assistance, and foster an inclusive diving environment, allowing individuals with diverse abilities to enjoy scuba diving confidently and comfortably.
Course content
The SSI Classified Dive Buddy Course is designed to enhance your diving experience by helping you build strong, reliable partnerships with the Classified (Adaptive) Diver. This course emphasizes the importance of effective communication, mutual understanding, and adaptability between dive buddies. Participants will learn how to assess each other’s skills, establish clear safety procedures, and develop the confidence to dive with a variety of partners in different environments. The course covers:
- Donning and doffing equipment
- Entry and exit techniques
- Dealing with various medical conditions
- Special communication skills
- Best practice techniques for propulsion, buoyancy and trim with Classified Divers
Prerequisites
- Minimuim age: 18 years old
- Diver Stress & Rescue (although this class can be taken before S&R)
- Proof of current First Aid and CPR training (or plan to enroll in the SSI React Right course)
What to bring
- Full scuba kit
- If you do not own your own equipment, Ski/Scuba Center will provide it for this class

The classroom and pool sessions are held at Ski/Scuba Center.
Training Materials
Upon making a deposit for this program, you will receive an email with a link to your digital training programs. You must complete all quizzes with a score of 100% before you arrive for class. There will be a multiple-choice exam at the end of the classroom portion. You must pass the final exam with a score of 80% or higher.
Training & Dives
- There is one classroom session.
- There is one pool session.
- There are no Open Water training dives required for this course.

- Two evenings (6pm-10pm) of classroom and pool instruction
